Chapter Eleven
Something inside Michael clutched at the thought of being with Bree and enjoying this view. He still wasnât sure what had come over him when heâd seen her and that dress. He knew she would be beautiful in it. The combination of her and the dress would beâwill be, he corrected himself, since he would see her in the dress tomorrowâstunning.
When he yawned, he put his hand over his mouth and apologized. âSorry. Long day. Night, really.â
âAnd Iâm standing here gazing out windows.â She turned toward him and seemed to hesitate. âMichael, you do not have to take me out tomorrow night. I know you offered, but I will find an occasion to wear my new dress, probably a business event, but there will be one.â She gave a self-deprecating smile that touched him. Did Bree Harris not have men lined up to take her out?
He could get out of the date. Did he want to? No, he didnât. Even if it caused him pain in the end when he boarded a plane for New York and she for Dallas. Bree felt so real to him, so warm and loving, that he wanted to absorb as much of her as he could.
Stepping forward, he tried to give her a reassuring smile. âNathaniel and I are taking Johnnyâs SUV to his house tomorrow. I have to be in Palmer anyway.â
âOh, well, if youâll be there anyway.â She gave a partial smile this time, one that didnât reach her eyes. âIâll go now so you can get some sleep.â
Less than a minute later, the door closed behind her.
âWhat happened?â he asked Patience. The appropriately named orange cat lay down and stretched out, giving the impression she had all day to work it out.
Charity sat and gave Michael his best cat stare, the one that clearly said he was smarter than the human in front of him. Maybe he was this time.
âI wanted to reassure her that I didnât have to go out of my way to take her out.â He smacked his forehead. âAnd I made her feel like she wasnât any more special than a boat trailer. Stupid.â
Patience gave a meow that said she agreed.
A key in the lock told him someone else had arrived. The door opened and his mother entered.
âMy new grandbaby is the cutest baby ever.â Her smile lit up the room, making him laugh.
âShe is cute. Did they tell you her name?â
âJohnny said they want to consider the names on their list this morning. Megan apparently felt so sure she carried a boy that she hadnât seriously considered which girlâs name she would want.â His mother set her purse down on a small table near the door. âI always think you should see a baby before you name it anyway. I have a friend who was supposed to be named Sally but didnât look at all like a Sally when she was born. She became a Gloria instead, and the name suited her very well.â
âYouâve always said you saw me and knew I should be named Michael.
